January 19th

The weather is grey, drab and drizzly today. After snow we received rain. It’s wet , damp , cold and  messy. Oh, how I dislike days like today. The only thing they are good for is sleeping, reading, writing, or an indoor hobby of some kind. Even the cats don’t like it. They’ve gone off to bed and will sleep most of the day because of it.

Well Today is :

National Popcorn Day

Edgar Allen Poe’s Birthday

January 19 is National Popcorn Day . However, do not be confused it with National Popcorn Month which is October or Caramel Popcorn Day which is April 7.

This is a good time for just kicking back renting movies and having a wonderful snack. IF you don’t want to rent a movie go to the movie and enjoy movie popcorn with lots of butter in those big popcorn tubs.

Here are five facts about popcorn:

1. Each kernel contains a tiny drop of water. This is why, when heated, the water expands causing the kernel to explode and flip inside out.

The story goes that the first popcorn was discovered when an Indian Squaw was carrying a sack of harvested corn. She walked past a campfire dropping some into the fire. Suddenly a popping sound went of scarring everyone in the camp thinking it was gun shots. However, it was a wonderful surprise to see the fluffy white kernels as they popped out of the campfire. Thus giving us our first popcorn treat.

2. Popcorn consumption declined significantly during the 1950s with the invention of the television. As Americans stopped going to the movies, the decrease in popcorn sales also occurred.  Even though individuals had their own popcorn machines no one wished to take time away from their television shows to pop it. Then with the new birth of microwave popcorn the favored snack was restored making it not only easy to have at home but also in work places.

3. The world’s oldest piece of popcorn, at 5,600 year old, was found in a bat cave in New Mexico in 1948 who would have imagined that.

4. The average American eats 17 gallons of popcorn a year. As a whole, America eats 4.3 billion gallons of popcorn a year. There are many variety of popcorn to choose from making it easy for everyone to find a favorite. Popcorn also is a wonderful gift for that hard to find person.

5. Some Native American tribes believed their ancestors’ spirits lived with in popcorn kernels. When they got angry from homes overheating, the kernels would explode leaving puffs of smoke in the air. Thus being reminded of your ancestor’s spirits and warnings.

Whatever your popcorn believe is this has been a favorite for many years.
