February 27th

Not a Good Day for ME !!!! SORRY!!

Weather was cold and miserable. My body ached form head to toe. I could barely stand up because of the pain in my foot.

Hopfully Tuesday will be a much better day.

National Days

February 27th is International Polar Bear Day. A polar bear is a white bear of the Arctic regions. The polar bear is the world’s largest land carnivore and the largest bear, with the adult males weighing in up to 1,500 pounds. Polar bears spend most of their time at sea and feed mostly on ringed and bearded seals. Polar bears are classified as a vulnerable species with global warming being a big threat.

On February 27, 1964, the Italian Government asked for help in preventing the tower from falling over while preserving the present lean that has brought so many tourists to Pisa. After 26 years of study and 10 years of reconstruction and stabilization, the tower was declared stable for another 300 years. The Leaning Tower of Pisa reopened to the public on December 15, 2001.

Leaning Tower of Pisa is a tall, round, marble campanile in Pisa, Italy, that is not perpendicular. Construction of the tower began in 1174.

National Strawberry Day

Before they were known as strawberries the fruit were called strewberries because they are strewn among the plant’s leaves. Food historians  believe that strawberries were first cultivated in ancient Rome. They were first cultivated in the US during the mid 1830’s in Massachusetts. Today strawberries grow in every US state and Canadian province.

Strawberries are a unique berry as it’s seeds grow on the outside of the fruit instead of the inside as most berries do.

Strawberries are a good source of potassium, fiber and vitamin C. The fruit is fat-free and cholesterol free. One cup of strawberries is only 49 calories, however most of those calories come from sugars.

When picking or buying strawberries choose only those that are plump, firm and completely red. Unless you are planning to freeze your strawberries or make jam be sure to not to buy more strawberries than you’ll be able to use up in two days as they mold quickly and only last a couple of days in the refrigerator.

There are many wonderful ways to enjoy strawberries from strawberry and cream, strawberry shortcake, a chocolate cake with strawberries, strawberry jam, jelly or preserves , there is also the wonderful strawberries dipped in chocolate, and what about topping your pancakes or cereal with fresh strawberries. There are so many ways that you can enjoy fresh strawberries.

For special recipes, information on preparing, storing and freezing them go on-line and look under Strawberries. Whatever way you may choose to enjoy them they are a wonderful treat.

Remember the sugar is a natural sugar and if you are watching sugar count make sure you eliminate something else from your diet that has sugar.
