April 2nd

Boy the time flies. Today the weather is calm. The  sun is out and I can hear the birds chirping. It’s always a good sign when you can hear the birds, so maybe today will be half way nice.  This year has had the craziest weather and I can’t keep up with it.

Today they are starting to fill the canals with water. That is good because it will allow room in the reservoir for new melting snow as it runs off and any new precipitation we get.

However, water in the canals always poses a danger especially at the beginning of the year. The water is ice-cold, deep and the banks are steep and nearly impossible to climb back out of.

It is very important that parents watch their children as we always have fatalities when the canals are full.

Also children should not swim in the canal water as that water carries many parasites that are harmful to humans.

However, the positive is now you can begin watering you lawns with canal water and saving money over those that have to water from the city. If you are not sure how to connect with irrigation systems call your local Irrigation Department and they will tell you if you have access to canal water. Many people don’t understand their water rights and need to call to find out.

We have irrigation here at the trailer court unless you are on the new section then your stuck with sprinklers that are in you lawn. However, I’m old section and we irrigate the yard and keep it nice and green.

The woman who lived here and was doing for everybody was in her seventy’s but she got sick and had stomach surgery. Now she lives with her daughter and everyone is on their own.  I miss talking with her.

They have given several cautions on the news in the past week. Besides the water canal they have cautioned about stinging insects.

This year will be worse for spiders, ants and flying insects due to the moisture and mild winter. They have already started to see signs of more of them coming out and it’s a month early.

They have cautioned that if you see swarms forming you should call your local agriculture department. They have also said, organic materials left on the ground will attract them and make nesting spots for them.

Better to be safe than sorry so get that old dead material raked up, mow the lawn and keep the yard neat and clean.

Remember there are industrial strength sprays you can buy for wasps and bees especially for those that are allergic like I am.

One of my favorite days

On 2 April 2012 it will be International Childrens Book Day, inspiring children to pick up a book and get reading!

April the 2nd was chosen to mark this day for young literature lovers as it’s the same date as Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday, the author of many famous children’s stories like The Little Mermaid and The Ugly Duckling.

Organised by the International Board on Books For Young People, or IBBY, the aim is to promote books and reading to young people. IBBY was founded in Zurich, Switzerland in 1953 and today there are 70 National Sections from all parts of the world.

During International Children’s Book Day there will be a number of events held around the world, including writing competitions and talks from famous authors and illustrators.

While you might be familiar with well-known works like Harry Potter and Alice in Wonderland, there is a whole host of fabulous children’s books out there waiting to be discovered – not just by children but by adults who are young at heart too!

To find out more about the day and events happening near you, visit International Childrens Book Day website and pick up a book today!

I hope everyone will enjoy today by remembering their favorite childhood book and read to either your child or someone else’s. However, if you don’t have a child to read to you can volunteer at your local  elementary schools, the library, or even a nursing home. They always appreciate readers. You can also enjoy reading to yourself those favorite stories from your childhood as I often do. So here is to enjoying reading today.

2 Reconciliation Day

for more information go to : http://holidayinsights.com/moreholidays/April/reconciliationday.htm

Since 1989, newspaper columnist Ann Landers has promoted April 2nd as Reconciliation Day. She writes an annual article dedicated to this day. She posts and replies to readers’ questions and issues on reconciliation.

To me it is an excellent idea trying to promote the importance of repairing and building a healthy relationship. This day and age I feel that people bail to easy. Relationships take hard work and effort, any thing worth working for is worth saving. So I salute all who honor this day and try to work out their differences.

There are many other “Relationship Days” held around the world on many different dates. Among the countries are South Africa, Korea, Angola and many others that have struggled with war and strife.

You can also find new postings on Reconciliation Day as since 9/11 the US Congress has declared it as a National Holiday and that the healing needs to begin from wars, devastation and whatever our country as well as other countries maybe facing. This is a somber day but important.

If you have lost someone to your country Reconciliation Day is a day to start your new life in their honor. May God Bless each and every one of you on your path to a better life.
