National Days:

23 Chinese Valentine’s Day/Daughter’s Day – 7th day of 7th Lunar Month

Chinese Valentine’s Day is on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month in the Chinese calendar. A love story for this day is about the 7th daughter of Emperor of Heaven and an orphaned cowherd. The Emperor separated them. The 7th daughter was forced to move to the star Vega and the cowherd moved to the star Altair. They are allowed to meet only once a year on the day of 7th day of 7th lunar month.

The story began from the good-looking poor orphaned boy living with his elder brother and sister-in-law. After his parents passed away, his brother inherited the house and the land. The boy owned an old ox. He needed to work on the farm’s field with the ox everyday. So he was called a cowherd. His daily life was just like in a Cinderella story.

The 7th daughter of Emperor is good at handcrafting, especially weaving clothing. So she was called a Weaving Maid. The Emperor likes her skill to weave clouds and rainbows to beautify the world.

23 Ride the Wind Day

Ride the Wind Day is a carefree day to soar above the earth. You can catch a ride with the breeze, or float along slowly like a gentle, late summer cloud.

Summer will soon be over. Catching the drift of this day is easy. Just relax, and let the wind carry you away in whatever direction it is blowing. Leave your troubles and worries behind for a spell, as you waft in the air.

Here are some great ways to enjoy Ride the Wind Day :

  • Fly in an airplane

  • Fly a kite

  • Parachute

  • Hang glide

  • Take a motorcycle ride

  • Hope in a sailboat, and go for a ride

  • Just kick back and enjoy one of the last days of summer

A fun activity for children is to make their own hot air balloon . It’s a wonderful craft project. Nut cups for parties work great attach them with string to a balloon filled with helium and let the soar. If you don’t want to lose them attach kite string and glide them rolling them back in as you wish.

Today is also a great day for visiting airport’s or any air shows in your area.

    National Sponge Cake Day

Today is National Sponge Cake Day! Sponge cake is the perfect dessert to enjoy at the end of a warm summer day. It is light and fluffy and has just enough sweetness to cleanse the palette after a meal.Traditional sponge cake recipes call for three very basic ingredients: sugar, eggs, and flour. The key to the perfect sponge cake is in the technique. The batter must be beaten thoroughly in order to create volume. There are many varieties of this dessert including the Victoria Sponge Cake. This version is loaded with jam that is spread between several layers of the cake. The dessert was named after Queen Victoria who enjoyed having a slice of it with her afternoon tea.To celebrate National Sponge Cake Day, bake a homemade sponge cake to share with friends and family, or buy one from your local bakery! Enjoy!

    3 eggs
    1 1/4 cups castor sugar
    1 teaspoon vanilla essence (extract)
    Pinch salt
    1 3/4 cups flour
    3/4 cup milk
    1/4 lb butter
    3+ tsp baking powder

Beat eggs, sugar, vanilla extract; add flour and salt then mix well. Boil milk and butter and add to mixture and mix well. Add baking powder.

Divide between two round baking pans and bake for half an hour at 350 degrees F.

Don’t ask what the 3+ means – I’ve always just used 3. You can use whatever jam you like between your layers, we like a dark berry jam. Dust with powdered sugar and serve while still warm, preferably with a cup of steaming tea.
